Study of the sofa and its absence
Watercolour on paper 10*10cm
The sofa represents a sense of comfort and belonging for me. Continuing the exploration of absence and erasure, I painted the absence of the sofa. The freshness of the watercolour is perfect for showing the light in the room.
After painting second and third versions of the sofa and its absence on ready bought canvases, I realised the ground was not suitable for my technique. Therefore, I spent some of my time making stretchers and different types of grounds and painting on them.

For example, in the slide showing "The Sofa #3", you can see an unsuccessful attempt of painting on a canvas without any ground applied on it and in "The Sofa #4", a successful ground can be seen. In this technique, I used sandpaper on every layer of dried paint, and the painting involves layers of charcoal, acrylic and oil.

In "The Sofa#4", the viewer can understand that I’m talking specifically about this sofa, which has a pillow and a blanket on it. The painting is more focused on the fact that this is a memory because of the technique I used.
Also, by making prints, I experimented with other qualities in the image. "The Sofa #5" is my favourite as it has a delicate light and the absence of the sofa is questionable and engaging in it.
Process of painting "The Sofa #4". I used sandpaper on every layer of dried paint except the last layer of oil paint.
An unsuccessful attempt for making a suitable ground. I was looking for a ground that is absorbent and has enough texture for the technique I wanted to work with.

After comparing the paintings I painted of the sofa, I realised "The Sofa #1" is closest to what I have in mind. The absence of the sofa is highlighted in this painting, and since the viewer can imagine any sofa in the vacancy, they would be more engaged. On the other hand, in this painting, the focus is on the moment. The freshness of the colours and light in the room helps the viewer to be more present at the moment. Another thing I like about this painting is its modesty because of the size, simple paint stains and technique.
