Lubaina Himid
This exhibition includes works from different periods of Himid's work. Her playful approach of thinking and art making helps the viewer to observe ideas from new perspectives. Storytelling plays a significant role in the works.
In the artwork "A Fashionable Marriage" the pieces remind a theatrical scene and Himid's inspiring use of everyday materials conveys a sense of closeness and intimacy to the viewer regarding the artwork.

‘How do you talk about something that can be seen and be thought of as not being there? Inside the invisible, if you like’. So Lubaina Himid asks and answers her own question concerning the missing ‘memories’, ‘evidence’ and ‘heroes of black peoples lives’. As an artist turned self-appointed historian, memorialist and storyteller who has undertaken extensive research into the transatlantic slave trade over the decades, she sheds light on the inspiration undergirding her experimental practice.
